Manchester United in recent days appear to be set to name interim manager Michael Carrick as their new boss . The contract is expected to be a two-year deal, with the option of a third year.
Red Devils fans rejoice? No, not exactly. A voice of calm and a voice of reason is needed. Man U fans, Michael Carrick doesn’t have that much experience in management.
Carrick did assist Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and manager Middlesborough too, but the top job at Manchester United? Well, that’s a different kettle of fish. United are 20-time Premier League champions, which makes them, alongside Liverpool as the most successful team in Premier League history.
Since being in the hotseat, the former Spurs midfielder has beaten the elite clubs. Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have all failed to come out on top against The Reds.
In fact Michael Carrick’s United have been at the top of the form table since arriving at the club, yes Man City and Arsenal haven’t done as well as them. On the flip side, Man United have been playing once a week and due to the fixture list, sometimes once every two weeks .
Man United fans, please don’t miss understand me, Carrick being United’s new manager seems like a good move, but only for the short term. If this appointment is to work for the long term, that’s down to the board and to a point Carrick himself.
The Man U board will need to back him and make sure they get the right signings, quickly and decisively. One rumoured target West Ham’s Mattheus Fernandes, could be scuppered due to rival clubs being interested.
The Manchester United of old used to scupper rival clubs’ deals because of their registered interest. Think Dimitar Berbatov for example. This is what this current board can do, be proactive and learn from past mistakes, but all signs don’t seem great.
For the love of Allah, instead of putting the news out that they’re interested in signing Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, maybe go out and sign the man? If it can’t be done for whatever reason, move on!
Do City or Liverpool do this? No they don’t. In the case with both clubs, they see player, want player and sign player. In terms of Michael Carrick, he needs to bear in mind that he too needs to evolve.
Even the great managers such as Pep Guardiola and Sir Alex Ferguson do. How many different assistant managers have both men had during their managerial careers? So there you have it, Michael Carrick can be a success at United, but he has to make sure the mistakes of the past don’t happen.
If they do, then maybe we will be look at a Roy Keane interim appointment?
