India recovered from the shambolic performance of last week, to superbly win the second test by 106 runs. In the first test of their first innings batting, Rohit Sharma’s men were indebted to youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 86.
In the second test though the Rajasthan Royals opener made a quite brilliant 209. That was some achievement as his team combined made 396 all out. To put Jaiswal’s innings into some form of context, Shubman Gill was the next highest scorer with 34.
England to their credit, probed away. Whereas with the other batsmen Ben Stokes’ side were making inroads into the batting order Yashasvi Jaiswal was a one man obstacle.
England in reply got their innings off to a typically fast start. The tourists were in danger of blowing away the home side, but then up stepped star bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
The 30-year-old Mumbai Indian’s star has been India’s star man with the ball for many years. On Sunday morning ( in accordance to UK times), Bumrah started his second spell.
With Kuldeep Yadav breaking the opening partnership, Jasprit Bumrah started a devilish four over spell. First test centurion Ollie Pope was bowled by a super Yorker and Joe Root was drawn into a false shot.
From being in a position of comfort, The Three Lions were crumbling as they were wilting against the relentless bowling of Jasprit Bumrah. JB was in his groove. The ACA-VDCA Stadium was almost like the streets of Ahmedabad in Jassi’s childhood, not the international arena high pressure situation he was actually in.
England’s batsmen were like sitting ducks and Jasprit Bumrah was like a sniper, effortlessly hitting his target at will. The 30-year-old was putting on a clinic of fast bowling excellence.
The tourists conceded a 143-run lead. England would have been hoping for similar heroics of the first test. To Ben Stokes’ side’s credit, the hosts were restricted to 255 all-out, but sadly for England the damage was already done.
To chase 400 runs was insurmountable, despite their best efforts. Zak Crawley (73) as well as Tom Hartley (36, did show some fight, but unfortunately for England they fell short here.
The harsh truth was that too many of the established batsmen only made starts and never truly went on to make any form of serious contribution. So the five-match series is 1-1 with left to play.
Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot will be hosting the third test which get under way on 15th February.
