Twelve months is a long time in life and also in the world of football. Well, even one week can be a long time in the beautiful game.
The recent upturn of form for former Manchester United has been a long time in the making but welcomed nevertheless.
Maguire, formerly of Leicester City is the world’s most expensive defender. This fact has been constantly used as a stick to beat the former United skipper with.
I argue this is unbelievably harsh to say that Maguire is a terrible player. After a good start to his career under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Harry Maguire suffered a horrible downturn in form.
No, the fact that players could get past him wasn’t one of the signs of a downturn in form. Maguire has never been the quickest, so I am not too worried about that.
What had deserted the 30-year-old was his calmness and composure on and off the ball. What that means in possession, an on song Harry Maguire looks calm, comfortable and unlikely to give the ball away.
In these past 12 months or so, these qualities seemed to have deserted the England centre-back, even at international level, where his performances saw him named in the Euro 2020 team of the tournament.
Off the ball, an in-form Maguire always would seem to get a well-timed block in. Harry Maguire wouldn’t rely too much on pace, because he would be in the right place at the right time.
In the past 12 months, many felt Maguire was getting exposed. This was alien territory for the former Leicester man.
In the recent game against Newcastle, where Manchester United were thoroughly outplayed, one player who could hold his head up high was Harry Maguire.
The former United skipper got many crucial blocks in. Remember football fans, England legends like John Terry didn’t rely on pace, so insisting Harry Maguire needs pace, just isn’t fair.
The former Hull and Sheffield United defender could do with a quicker central-defensive partner, but the way Andre Onana acts, he has convinced himself he’s that man.
Welcome back to form Harry Maguire, it’s worth commentating on his resurgence as they are even doing this in Ghana’s Government.
