The football world is in mourning. Sad news has come out in the football world, the news that iconic commentator John Motson has passed away aged 77. Motson was an iconic voice and for me as a child growing up in the 90s, his voice was synonymous with Match Of The Day.

Of course, he didn’t just commentate on the Premier League matches, in fact, Motson would commentate on over 2,000 games from World Cup matches as well as 200 England games.

John Motson was a broadcaster for over 50 years. Motson before joining the BBC full-time in 1968, worked for BBC Sheffield. From 1968-2018, the British public and many viewers from across the world were treated to the iconic voice of Motty.

Roy Hodgson, Crystal Palace chairmen Steve Parish as well as commentator colleagues Clive Tyldesley and Martin Tyler paid tributes to John Motson.

For me, an aspiring football writer and broadcaster growing up when I did, John Motson was a voice, the voice of football. Of course, the stylish coats will get a mention when thinking of the name John Motson, but he was so much more than that.

The way he described the action was magical, it made you think you were on the football terraces yourself.

The 77-year-old Motson leaves his wife Anne and Frederick behind. Our prayers and thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
