Germany have been knocked out of the 2026 World Cup, losing the round-of-32 match against Paraguay 4-3 on penalties. This defeat for Die Mannschaft is their first penalty shootout defeat in their history.

As a result of this defeat, it continues a worrying trend of results in which Germany have not reached the latter stages of tournaments since reaching the final in 2018.

Death, taxes, and Germany winning a penalty shootout are the things guaranteed in life, but even that’s changed. The four-time World Cup winners, although they had a lot of experience on the pitch, all seemed to be daunted by Paraguay’s 6 ft 6 in goalkeeper.

This result increases the pressure on manager Julian Nagelsmann. The former Bayern and Leipzig manager has a deal with the German FA that doesn’t end until Euro 2028.

Fierce rivals Holland also lost a penalty shootout in the round of 32, going down 3-2 to Morocco.
