After the debacle of postponing their last series in the country, New Zealand, have started their T20 of Pakistan, but will be doing so with a depleted team due to IPL commitments of top stars such as regular skipper Kane Williamson.

The Black Caps, are arguably one of the best sides in the limited overs game when they have a fully fit squad, but what New Zealand currently are having to attend with is several new players in their squad, where many are making their debuts.

Debuting against one of the best bowling line-ups in the world had been quite the baptism of fire for the Kiwi opening pair. In the first game, Michael Bracewell who is the stand-in skipper whilst Williamson is away, saw his side skittled out for just 90.

To their credit, Bracewell’s side battled back very admirably indeed. Having been battered by seven wickets in the first game, New Zealand admirably chase down a total of 180, with the loss of two-wickets.

This was some turn-around to the game 24 hours prior. A very good sign from the New Zealand perspective that their make-shift C-team can compete against a near-full strength Pakistan team, who were beaten finalists in the last T20 World Cup.

Babar Azam’s Pakistan did make some changes, so on one hand this series can help his side get the experience needed of different match scenarios. From what I have observed, which has been an achilles heel for them for some time is the difficulty they have when setting scores.

Alongside that and the challenges they face to push on their total from approximately overs 7-12 (approx), is at the other end, they struggle to exert control matches through their spinners.

Imad Wasim in World Cups gone by had been an outlet for them, but it appears the think tank of Pakistan have moved away from him, even if he has reversed his retirement decision.

It’s been a fascinating series between the two sides. The fourth match between the two will start at 15:30 on Thursday at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
