Barcelona won their first La Liga title since 2019, after a resounding 4-2 win at the home of their local rivals Espanyol. A double from Pole Robert Lewandowski as well as goals from Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde was enough for The Catalans to get the win.
The home side did get two late goals to try and force a contest, but it was too little too late. For Espanyol, they’re facing the realistic scenario of a second relegation in four seasons.
Periquitos are four points from safety with just four matches left to play.
As bad as that is, Espanyol had to see their rivals Barca win the title in their backyard. This site got too much for some supporters after a few ran onto the pitch to angrily confront the Barcelona players at full-time.
This title win for Xavi’s Barcelona is the 27th in their history, only Real Madrid (35) have won more. Barca after losing 3-1 to Real in October, were trailing them by three points in the league table.
Eleven 1-0 wins, helped Barcelona win their first title in four years after they built up a 14-point lead with just four games left to play. The Catalan giants are on course to better the record for the least goals conceded in a season (18).
The only blot on this season has been Barca’s European record. They were knocked out of the group stages of the Champions League and were also beaten by Manchester United in the last-16 of the Europa League.
Although domestically Xavi has won a trophy, I am sure the report card would say can do better.
Barcelona’s latest title win was the perfect send-off for legendary midfielder Sergio Busquets, who has announced he’s leaving the club. It’s a season full of change for Barca next season as they will be moving out of Camp Nou as their stadium gets redeveloped.
