In what was one of the worst-kept secrets in football, it is a secret no more. Yesterday Chelsea announced that they have named former Tottenham Hotspur Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager.

At this stage, it’s not clear the length of his contract, but Chelsea owner Todd Boehly will need to stick by the Argentine. Every player that Chelsea have signed under the new owners it appears that their contract has been no less than a five-year deal. Poch will need a similar deal if he is to be given any chance to succeed.

Having previously been manager of arch-rivals Tottenham, to have agreed to take the job at Stamford Bridge some fans will find it hard to accept. At Spurs, he was loved and at Chelsea not so loved arguably due to his success with the North London club.

Pochettino in theory has a good squad, a squad that will give him a chance to be successful next term, but it’s also very bloated in certain areas. To their credit, Chelsea’s signings have been young players, something that their new manager prefers (to work with younger players).

Both manager and owner will be desperate for this appointment to work, especially as both have had previously bad experiences.

Just like Potter before him, he will need to be given time to be allowed to implement his ideas and also tidy up the mess of this season. With FFP sanctions a genuine threat, this is also another reason why Chelsea will be trimming their squad down.

But above all that, Todd get this man a striker! Also Mr Boehly, despite what you think, 4-4-3 is not the way forward!
