In the late 90s early 2000s, the term Galactico came synonymous with Real Madrid. The term Galactico is the Spanish to describe galactic, which is how a superhero is described.
Superman, Batman and Spiderman are all seen as galactic due to their out-of-world superpowers. So when Florentino Perez at the time bankrolled an outlay of over £250 million where some of the world’s elite players were signed, to describe these players, the phrase Galactico was used.
David Beckham, Zinedine and the Brazilian Ronaldo were signed in and around this era. The three of these great players were put into the Galactico category.
Real Madrid, taking advantage of their unrivalled might at the time, were winning all of club football’s competitions, domestically and on the European/world stage.
The times were good. Los Blancos wouldn’t have wanted such an era to end, but all good things don’t last. Financial Fair Play came to spoil the party and the need to redevelop the Santiago Bernabeu meant that even Real had to scale back on fancy extravagant signings.
An era followed where Real Madrid were one of the lowest spenders in Europe. This might have been a big deal, but on the pitch under Zinedine Zidane, during the mid-2010s, the Spanish giants won an unprecedented three Champions League titles in a row.
Those achievements put then-coach Zidane in an elite company. A talented crop of players were coming through such as Nacho, Vazquez and Asensio to name some, so the need to open up the chequebook wasn’t there it was felt.
Over time, however, Real’s superb midfield which included Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric needed some upgrading. That made Real go in and sign Eduardo Camavinga.
The former Rennes man has been superb during his time at Real Madrid. Although he’s not been playing in his preferred position in midfield, Camavinga has been outstanding at left-back, which has helped Real with their squad balance.
They have replaced Ferland Mendy, who is a more defensive player, with the more attack-minded Eduqardo Camavinga on several occasions. The young Frenchman’s energy has seen him excel in the role.
This isn’t the only talented French player they have signed too, with Aurelian Tchouaméni being the other.
Both of these two talented French players have fitted in seamlessly. In attack too, the signings of Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior and now Endrick is ominous for the rest of Spain and Europe too.
If that wasn’t impressive in itself, it’s emerged that Los Blancos are now in advanced talks to sign Jude Bellingham. The Birmingham City academy graduate who has impressed for Borussia Dortmund for the past few seasons, is valued at €150 million by his club, Real only want to pay €100 million. Come on Florentino give the rest of them a chance!
We can’t even pick apart the defence as Eder Militao/ Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba is a centre-back pairing that can be the mainstay for Real for many more seasons.
The only holes that can be picked in this Real Madrid side is the right-back slot and also the striker area of the pitch.
Karim Benzema isn’t getting younger and neither is Nacho, but in line with the new Real they’ve got a plan. It was only a last-minute change of heart that stopped PSG striker Kylian Mbappe from joining, but we don’t bet against such a move happening in the future.
Real Madrid are a juggernaut that can’t be stopped it seems, they stop themselves and carry on in their own time when they’re ready.
This is a very ominous sign for the rest of Europe as it looks more and more to be the case that a new wave of galacticos has come to run the footballing world on the pitch.
