A laughing stock

In our previous discussion sports fans, we spoke about football, as much as having a global appeal, it resonates with local fans, or at least it’s supposed to. After United and City are in the FA Cup final and the Milan sides are in the semi-final, there’s an air of optimism regarding the progress of both clubs.

With that in mind, for fans of London sides Tottenham and Chelsea, it’s no doubt been a season to forget. Sports fans, we will discuss Chelsea a bit more on another day, today let’s talk Tottenham Hotspur.

North London club Tottenham, have been in free fall ever since they dispersed the services of popular Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino.
With a squad that included the likes of Christian Erikson, Harry Kane, Delle Ali and others, under Poch’s tenure, The Lillywhites would finish runners-up in the Premier League on more than one occasion.

Tottenham fans haven’t had days this good since the ’60s. Previous managers Martin Jol and Harry Redknapp did do respectable jobs in their time at the then White Hart Lane, but former PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino’s success hadn’t been seen on the Tottenham side of North London.

Spurs’ success didn’t yield success, but did bring stability. Cynical fans were critical of Tottenham’s lack of trophies in this period, especially with a talented side, but since then it’s been all downhill.

It started with the sacking of Pochettino. Now it’s hard to say if the former Southampton and Espanyol manager should have remained at Spurs, but their managerial appointments have been poor.

Don’t miss understand this. Jose Mourinho is an outstanding coach, but he’s a more pragmatic coach, there was always going to be a change in playing style and tactics.

Tottenham were famed for an aggressive press, so much so that teams like Manchester City would get nightmares almost playing them, because Pep’s men would always tend to lose when they travelled to White Hart Lane.

Even when now Roma coach Mourinho was sacked, the process to hire a replacement was so embarrassing, I am surprised they didn’t look on Indeed or the good old-fashioned Yellow Pages.

After what seemed like an eternity and the doomed appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo, Tottenham struck gold on paper with the appointment of one of the super coaches of world football, one Mr Antonio Conte.

The Italian, who was a former Chelsea boss was a serial winner, but he had a squad that needed some surgery and TLC. Initially, it worked, but a barren run and finally a 6-1 defeat to top-four rivals Newcastle has seen Antonio Conte and now his assistant both leave the club.

Just like after the sacking of Jose, Ryan Mason, who was assistant to Christian Stellini steps to take caretaker charge of Tottenham.

Reportedly Julian Nagelsmann and Louis Enrique and Vincent Kompany have been sounded out for the managers’ job, but as of yet, there’s been no appointment.

Again if reports are to be believed former Spurs boss Pochettino is all set to take charge of cross-city rivals Chelsea. First Willian was in the line of many preferring Chelsea over Tottenham, but one of their own?

Daniel Levy, if Poch does go, this is an all-time low, even for you Sir. For the sake of the fans Daniel, please don’t mess this appointment up! It’s all fair and well having the fancy stadium, but if fans won’t fill it, what’s the point?
