Manchester United ended their six year trophy draught with a 2-0 win over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final. Goals from Casemiro and a Sven Botman own goal, helped The Red Devils win their first trophy since Jose Mourinho won the League Cup and Europa League in his first season.
At times in yesterday’s final, United had their backs against the wall, but in the end did enough to over come The Magpies who after an excellent season have come into a bad run of form.
This still shouldn’t take anything away from Eddie Howe’s men and Howe himself. Newcastle have been very well drilled defensively and despite the absence of Alan Saint-Maximan, have performed brilliantly in the Premier League and League Cup.
For those Manchester United fans who are getting carried away with this result, let’s put things into perspective. You were probably the same fans who were mocking Liverpool for winning this tournament last year.
This year it’s the most important tournament, last year it was the mickey mouse cup. It’s good Manchester United have won a trophy, United are a club who wins trophies, with respect the biggest trophies.
The last time Man United won this trophy, they then went trophy less for six years. With Erik Ten Haag at the helm it appears hard for The Red Devils to have such a long trophy draught, but one can’t take things for granted.
Yesterday’s win in the Carabao Cup is a step in the right direction, but for Manchester United to be truly back, they need three, maybe four new faces brought in, in the summer. Hopefully Marcel Sabtizer’s loan turns into a permanent deal at the end of the season.
With the appointment of former Ajax manager Ten Haag, he has come from a club with a winning mentality. It’s early doors, but it looks like he’s bringing back the winning mentality to Old Trafford.
The Dutchman will need time and support in what he is trying to do. A step in the right direction for United yes, but the Man United of old would win a trophy a season. Or there, there bout’s.
Are Manchester United back? Let’s revisit this conversation in two maybe three seasons time, only then can we truly judge.
