New manager bounce

It’s one of the biggest mysteries in football, but it always seems to happen. When a new manager gets appointed, results in the team improve. Ok, not always, sorry Nathan Jones at Southampton, but you too have got some good results along the way.

The Welshman Jones’ highlight while being in charge of The Saints is the 2-0 Quarter-final Carabao Cup win over Manchester City, who had a dominance of this trophy in the last five seasons or so.

In the Premier League relegation zone, Everton have had a change of manager and then got an inspired result against Arsenal and Wolves too got a superb result against Liverpool.

I didn’t want to think of this new manager bounce as being a thing, but even at Manchester United, then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a superb start, so much so it lead to the now infamous ‘Ole is at the wheel’ rant by Rio Ferdinand.

Sadly for United and the man himself, he was sacked after a disappointing set of results. Another example which springs to mind is West Brom manager Carlos Carberran.

The Spaniard who was a coach and assistant under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds has impressed many with his excellent work first at Huddersfield and now West Brom.

If rumours are to be believed, Leeds United who had a caretaker manager in yesterday’s 2-2 thriller with arch-rivals Manchester United, want their assistant to now be their head coach.

There are other contenders for the Leeds United role, which is something we will discuss in a separate article. Rangers, who sacked manager Giovani Van Bronkhorst at the start of the season, replaced the Dutchman with former assistant manager Michael Beale.

The results have been brilliant. Since Englishman Beale has been at Ibrox, he’s yet to taste defeat. Although the argument is not a case of black and white, there’s a real argument that with a new manager, teams see an upturn in form.

It’s not always. Examples of this are Nathan Jones at Southampton and to a point Unai Emery at Aston Villa, although The Villains did go on a mini run post-World Cup.

So, this is my opinion, what’s yours? Would love to know your thoughts in the comments.
