Curran becomes most expensive IPL player

In what was a fruitful auction for England’s players, the headline to emerge from the auction was the World T20 player of the tournament Sam Curran has become the most expensive player in IPL history after being bought for £1.85 million.

The left-arm all-rounder, who starred for CSK last season, even batting as high as number three, will rejoin former franchise Punjab Kings after Chennai lost out in the bidding war.

Six franchises were bidding for Curran’s services but it was the Punjab side who came out on top of this bidding battle. Sam Curran in the earlier parts of his career, was renowned for being a very competent bowler, but a dangerous lower-order batsman.

In the past 12-18 months to his credit, he has now become one of the most fearsome bowlers in T20 cricket, especially the death overs. England captain Jos Buttler has assigned the task of being a death-overs bowler to Curran, and very rarely has he been let down.

He took 13 wickets at an average of 11.38 at the World Cup in Australia, to only further highlight his skills with the ball. The Punjab Kings are getting some player, an even better player than what they had the first time around.

Fellow Englishmen Harry Brook and Joe Root also got IPL deals. Brook will join the Sunrisers Hyderabad for £1.35 million and Root, who was initially sold, to Rajasthan Royals for £100,000.

Other England players have also been signed up to India’s premier T20 tournament such as England red ball captain Ben Stokes who will be indirectly replacing Curran at CSK after Chennai signed the former Rajasthan player for £1.6 million.

Adil Rashid, one of the best spinners in world T20 cricket will join Brook in Hyderabad, while Will Jacks and Reece Topley have been signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals took Phil Salt.

Ireland seamer Josh Little, who impressed in the T20 World Cup, will sign for defending champions Gujarat Titans. Youngster Rehan Ahmed who impressed in the final test match of the Pakistan series, as well as Tom Curran and Chris Jordan who are something of IPL veterans, were unsold in the IPL auction.
