What is it with PSG and central midfielders?

Until Newcastle came they and Manchester City were the richest football clubs in world football. Any player they wanted, they pretty much got. From Mbappe to Neymar, to Sergio Ramos and Lionel Messi.

Simply put PSG want, PSG gets, except for central midfield players? It seems bizarre to say this for a club with the riches of the Parisians, but if speculation is to be believed, Luis Campos the Sporting Director of the French giants is wanting to sign Manchester United star Fred.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk man largely hasn’t been able to live up to his £50 million+ price tag. Not played in the right position and other factors could be pointed out as to why things haven’t gone quite as well as the 29-year-old would have wanted them to in Manchester.

Not deterred by this, it’s said that PSG are tabling a £30 million bid and United would be ready to accept. If this deal does go through, then this would add to the list of deals that PSG have completed for midfielders who happen to ply their trade in the Premier League.

Idrissa Gueye, Ander Herrera and Gini Wijnaldum are the players to have made the switch to the French capital and have struggled. In the case of now re-signed Everton midfielder Gueye, this seems to support my theory of for all of Paris’ riches that they have, they can’t find a good central midfielder.

Another player I mentioned here (Wijnaldum) is on loan at AS Roma. Which again has shown arguably another miss for PSG’s recruitment department.

Of course, they have Verratti still and once upon a time they had Blaise Matuidi, but since then, things have gone a bit down for PSG when signing players from this part of the pitch.

Recent signings such as Vitinha, Carlos Soler and Fabian Ruiz have suggested they have addressed the problem to some degree, but new signings take time to bed in. Even a certain Lionel Messi needed time to settle into his new surroundings.

If those signings work out and PSG fans hope they will, then just maybe European glory awaits. Ladies and gentlemen, the Louis Campos effect.
