We think we will stay young forever. The sad thing is, time waits for no one and we all have to get old one day. For the average person, what you will get is grey hairs or hairs that we won’t mention, it’s best to put it that way.
For a sports person signs of decline, which is, in turn, is a way of saying they’re getting old is when they get injured more, or not as quick as they used to be. In footballing terms, this is Belgium I am afraid.
Famous for its chocolate, Belgium under Marc Wilmott and Roberto Martinez, have risen up the world rankings and become the world’s number one ranked side.
In 2016 and 2018, was the chance for their ‘golden generation’ to shine. Sadly, for the Belgians, this didn’t materialise and all they could achieve was a third-place finish.
They did go one better than their fourth-place finish in Mexico 86, but it was widely accepted this Belgium team was special. That reminds me of what many said about England’s football team in the 2000s.
It was sad viewing when that team failed to deliver what was expected of them. What makes things worse with this Belgium team is that a talented team of four years is still largely together.
Continuity? Well, that’s usually a good thing, but it’s painstakingly obvious in this instant it isn’t. In the first game of the World Cup, minnows Canada played them off the park.
They won that game by Batishuayi brilliance and Canada’s forwards leaving their shooting boots at the training ground. If that warning sign wasn’t bad enough, Morocco against the odds defeated them 2-0.
Now, The Red Devils have a winner takes all game against Croatia. Will they win? I don’t think so. The Croats, have big game nous these days, they didn’t get to the final of Russia 2018 by fluke.
There is light at the end of the tunnel. Romeu Lavia, Jeremy Doku , Charles De Ketelaere, Amadou Onana to name some. But the tunnel is long and dark for now.
Roberto Martinez’s side are a shadow of their former selves, they’re s fallen giant. When Belgium emerge from the shadows, the football world will be ready to embrace them.
Until gents, play nice with one another. Kevin and Jan, you’re teammates, you as well Romelu and Michi.
