UK Snooker Championship; The fall of the giants

Snooker always has the role of supporting act behind more ‘illustrious sports’. It’s a shame that this is the case, as the game of snooker and this week’s UK Snooker Championship in particular.

This might be due to the way it’s televised, but it can be argued that snooker is a sport not as prominent as football and cricket. But don’t let this take anything away from snooker.

What makes the sport as great as it is in my humble opinion is, anyone can beat anyone on the day. Before world number one Ronnie O’Sullivan was defeated in the quarter-final, and that a shock 6-0 whitewash to Ding Junghui, the world number two to world number eight were all dumped out of the tournament.

That meant players ranked from 9-16 in the world were left in the draw. Players Jack Lisowski, the talented world number 12, appeared to finally go someway to fulfil his talent, with a near flawless 6-1 win over former world champion Sean Murphy.

Sadly for the Englishmen, he would come up against former Masters Champion Mark Allen, who after being 5-3 down, rallied to win 6-5 and make Lisowski’s wait for an elusive ranking title go on.

So, the final, which will be covered by us here at, will see three-time winner Ding Junghui come up against Mark Allen. The favourite, will of course be the Chinese legend Ding, but Northern Irishmen Allen, doesn’t believe in favourites as he has shown over the years.

The final between the two men will be start today at lunchtime, where the winner will get a cheque for a cool £250,000.
