Silencing Martinez critics

He’s too small, Haaland and Mitrovic will destroy him, are just some of the criticisms labelled at Manchester United new boy Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine, who can play at centre-back or central midfield, has come under scrutiny, due to his height (5ft 9).

With all the criticisms that can be labelled at a player, height is one of the most stupid. Gianfranco Zola, Fabian Barthez and to bring it defence-related World Cup winners Fabio Cannavaro and Carlos Puyol, are all players who were small in size, but giants in stature.

To bring it to facts, Martinez got two man of the match awards (against Liverpool and Southampton respectively). But no, they don’t have big stocky forwards like Erling Haaland or Aleksander Mitrovic for example.

Football fans, let’s dispel this myth, it’s getting silly. Now, as you know I am a Man United fan, so this isn’t a blind defence. On crosses and set pieces, Lisandro will struggle, but what about the Argentine’s strengths?

The former Ajax man is superb across the ground, and all be it early days, he’s forming a superb understanding with French World Cup winner Rafael Varanne.

Mitrovic will bully him they say. Sorry football analysts, were you playing golf that day when the ‘world’s best defender’ Virgil Van Dijk was getting schooled by the Fulham man?

This is the six-foot VVD, but no, let’s not mention that. As a sports writer on the-sports-buff.com, of course, I want to be fair and impartial, I want to build this site and show footballing integrity I want to call it, by calling black, black and white, white.

Martinez had a torrid time against Ivan Toney when United played Brentford, The Red Devils as a team were run ragged against more hungry and determined opponents. This is early doors in the season, so let’s not get this mistaken, nor get carried away.

Virgil is in poor form, but I have no doubt he will improve and also Lisandro Martinez who marshalled Erling Haaland in the Champions League will be a success in the role.

He will have tough games yes, but World Cup winners have been small in stature, but their other qualities have shone through. Typical media silliness, Daley Blind, the now Ajax defender is 5 ft 10, 5 ft 11 at best, but people weren’t obsessed then, why?

Lisandro Martinez is 5 ft 9 yes, but he is a giant on the pitch. As a United fan, I appreciate that some players have been dropped, Erik Ten Haag has given this team a shake-up, it was desperately needed.

They won’t learn (the media), but please put some respect on Lisandro’s name.
