A Joao Ppaulinha goal was enough to help Tottenham survive the drop and send West Ham down, which put an end to their 14-year stay in the top flight. The Hammers won, and won well; they beat Leeds United 3-0, but the fact that The Lillywhites won made The Irons’ result irrelevant.
It was only three years ago that West Ham won the Conference League with former manager David Moyes. Since then, the managerial appointments have been poor, and the signings haven’t been great either.
The departure of Lucas Pacqueta hasn’t been addressed either. The Hammers didn’t build upon an encouraging period. The East London side reached the Europa League semi-final and, as mentioned, won the Conference League.
There was only supposed to be one way, up, but this season they have been desperately poor. Yes, there were periods in the season that offered West Ham promise, but on the whole, if West Ham had survived, you could argue they would have been lucky.
It just happened to be that Tottenham, in the same season, were competing to be just as poor as them, but only finishing better off due to the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi.
A busy summer at West Ham’s Olympic Stadium, where there will be many player sales, awaits us, no doubt.
