Tough act to follow

Good morning sports fans, I hope you’re well and looking after yourselves, it’s me Ayyaz Malik aka The Sports Buff. Guys gals, ladies and gents it’s one of those times again, we need to have a chat, a chat about Chelsea FC.

The West London side, who were taken over by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in the early 2000’s have gone on to dominate English football since. Manchester City, since their own takeover have tried to challenge what was becoming the status quo in England’s domestic football competitions.

Key to this success, might have been the blockbuster signings, (let’s forget about the re-signing of Romelu Lukaku), but one of the understated reasons is the way Chelsea were set up behind the scenes.

Marina Granovskia, a director was not known by many (including myself), but now is most certainly leaving with her reputation firmly enhanced as a respected footballing person. On her watch The Blues were able to on the whole sign players for a good price and sell unwanted fringe players for a good price.

It was this astute transfer dealings which saw Chelsea, seldom put on the UEFA naughty step, next constant naughty boys Manchester City and PSG. Europe’s football governing body, might have been a bit soft with their football parenting skills to discipline entitled behaviour, but West London club Chelsea have been well raised.

Accept for Lukaku and Morata, I (please correct me if I am wrong) can’t recollect Chelsea paying over the odds for a player *puts his heads in his hands thinking about David £50 million Luiz*.

But that isn’t Marina’s fault is it? The 31-year old Kalidou Koullibaly is set to sign for the Stamford Bridge club for £30 million plus and Nathan Ake is also set to join for £50 million.

The new director of football on an interim basis at least is Todd Boehly and he has massive shoes to fill, but it’s a good start to his tenure so far, by signing Raheem Sterling. For a player of the 25-year old’s undoubted potential and how ridiculous the market is, £50 million is value for their buck.

It didn’t make that reference due to Boehly being American, no. Mount, Timori, Abraham, Chabolah are just some of the players to come out of the academy. If Chelsea’s new regime can work bringing more of these kids through and not resort to over priced signings like Ake, then just maybe Todd and co have not only picked up the Marina Granovskia, but they have ran through to take the gold medal.
