The Premier League is in a state of congratulating a legend, James Milner. The veteran midfielder, who was playing for Brighton, has decided to hang up his boots.

This ends a playing career that spans over three decades, which started as a fresh-faced teenager for his beloved Leeds United. At The Lillywhites, he held the record of being the youngest goal scorer in Premier League history.

Arsenal’s Max Dowman, of course, now holds that record. Milner played for Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and, of course, Brighton. Towards the end of last season, Yorkshireman Milner beat Gareth Barry’s appearance record of 654 Premier League appearances.

It wasn’t at club level that James Milner had a respectable career. Even at international level, the former Leeds United midfielder was reliable. At the start of his career, Milner was a midfielder, and maybe one could even classify him as an attacking player, but as his career developed, he became a valuable squad member.

His versatility and his willingness to put his team first made him invaluable to managers. At Liverpool, he won a League title and an FA Cup, and with Manchester City, he won two Premier League titles.

For England, he won 61 caps.
