In the world of clubs looking for the next wonder kid, the next big thing, and the need to lower the average age of the squad, some clubs will look for experienced players.

This method isn’t for everyone. Teams like Borussia Dortmund, who have done this for many years, and now Newcastle are opting for the signing-a-young-player model: develop him, and then sell him on.

Premier League giants Chelsea and La Liga giants Real Madrid appear to be rotating back to their methods of old. After both sides have spent the past few seasons trying to sign younger talent, both have gravitated back to signing proven stars.

Real have signed Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Bernardo Silva. This has gone against their previous strategy of signing young players. Premier League giants Chelsea, after seeing an agreement to sign Granit Xhaka fall through, have again gone for experienced talent.

That’s going on the basis that the allegedly dual talent of Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck find themselves going through the Stamford Bridge doors. This was Chelsea, the same one that has been stockpiling young talent.

No matter the club, the need for balance will always be there.
