Premier League side Aston Villa won the Europa League, winning a European trophy for the first time since 1982. Freiburg staged a comeback in the semi-final to defeat Portuguese side Braga in the semi-final, but were always up against it here.
Stunning goals from Youri Tielemans and Emi Buendia settled any potential nerves on the night. Morgan Rogers added a third in the second half to add gloss to an already impressive score line.
This win for The Villains sees them qualify for next season’s Champions League as Europa League winners.
That means Unai Emery, who is the most successful manager in the tournament with five titles, will prepare his side for a game against Premier League rivals Arsenal or PSG, the holders of the Super Cup.
One set of fans who will be happy with this result is Liverpool fans. Tonight’s win for The Villains at Istanbul Park means that Liverpool will qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Arguably, the celebrations will be just as big at Anfield as they are at Villa Park.
