Six-time Champions League winners were the only English side to progress to the quarter-finals, after they beat Turkish champions Galatasaray 4-0. Goals from Dominic Szoboszlai, Hugo Ekiteke, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohammed Salah saw the Premier League champions safely through.

Fellow Premier League sides Newcastle and Tottenham are both out. The Magpies, who were looking to get through to the quarter-finals for the first time, were evenly poised from the first leg with five-time winners Barcelona.

Eddie Howe’s team were in the contest at one stage when Swedish winger Anthony Elanga grabbed a brace, but from there on in, it was all Barca. Poland International also scored two on the night, as did former Leeds winger Raphinha, with the other goals coming from teenage sensation Yamine Yamal, Fermin Lopes and Marc Bernal.

This win for Hansi Flick’s side lays down a real marker for the rest of the remaining sides left in the competition. As for Newcastle, they won’t be in the Champions League, which will be a massive blow to those behind the scenes at the club.

The Champions League prize money is somewhere in the region of £100 million, which is a lot of money even for the rich bags Newcastle. Fellow Premier League side Tottenham are also out, after losing 7-5 on aggregate to two-time former Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid.

Spurs did win 3-2 on the night, but due to the disastrous first leg, their efforts proved in vain. What Igor Tudor’s men can take great credit for is the week that they have had.

Tottenham were expected to probably lose both games against Liverpool and Atletico, respectively, on the night, but to their credit, they battled to a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Sunday and won on the night here at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Champions League.

Tonight’s last game saw Bayern, who were leading 6-1 from the first leg, win at the Allianz Arena 4-1 against Atalanta. Including the results last night, only Liverpool and Arsenal remain as England’s Champions League representation.
