The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have ruled that the result in the final between Morocco and Senegal be overturned. At the end of the 90 minutes and extra-time, Senegal, winners of the title in 2021, won the title thanks to a superb goal from Villareal’s Pape Gueye.

During the game, it was The Lions of Teranga who had the better of the game, before the scored legitimately, they had a goal ruled out in injury time. much to the frustration of everyone associated with Senegal.

What didn’t help was that it appeared certain decisions were being awarded in favour of the hosts when they shouldn’t have been. The last-gasp penalty awarded to The Atlas Lions appeared to be the last straw for Senegal and their manager, Pape Thiaw, who felt the decision was harsh. to put it mildly.

A 17-minute delay ensued as The Lions of Teranga walked off the pitch and wandered into the changing room, except for one man, former Liverpool attacker Sadio Mane.

The situation was tense and at a stand-off. Officials wanted the match to resume, but Senegal, who felt they were dealing with one bad decision too many, refused.

It’s not clear what brought them back and made them want to finish the game, but to their credit, after the bad miss by former City midfielder Brahim Diaz from the spot, Senegal scored through Pape Gueye in extra time, who had come close earlier in the game.

Morocco, who were second best throughout the game, did have chances and saw a shot cleared off the line, after going a goal down, but the initial result based on the game’s play was a fair one.

Walid Regragui, who resigned from his role as coach of The Atlas Lions, just might have acted in haste. Sport is about winning fair and square; this appears as a knee-jerk reaction to something.

Only the powers that be in African football can work out the logic of announcing this news now. Logic says, this is over three months too late.
