In the past few seasons, Premier League giants Liverpool and Chelsea have not only been competing on the pitch, but off the pitch too, in the transfer market. Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo are two examples of transfer tussles going in the way of Chelsea, but Liverpool have got one back.
The Reds on deadline confirmed the signing of Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet from French side Rennes. Not heard of him? You will be forgiven for saying this. To be honest, our knowledge of him is limited, but we like to do a bit of research here at The Sports Buff HQ.
That will be another night in, swatting up with knowledge on the internet and looking at Mr YouTube and the videos that he has on the 19-year-old. From reports of other outlets, they have branded him as the next Virgil van Dijk, but in my humble opinion, I think this is a bit lazy.
Yes, I haven’t seen Jacquet in action, but the football community always does that, makes lazy comparisons. Joao Felix is going to be the next Cristiano Ronaldo, do you remember that one?
Liverpool wanted to sign Marc Guehi in the last window for a fraction of the price (35 million), but it didn’t work out. The youngster Jacquet has been signed instead. With the former Rennes defender being six/seven years Guehi’s junior, maybe the deal is worth it?
Just a point needed to make for Chelsea, next time you want to sign a player, don’t make it so publicly known.
