Then there were two. On Sunday, pre-tournament favourites and hosts Morocco come toe-to-toe with Senegal, winners of the 2021 edition. The Atlas Lions, who boast some star power with the likes of skipper Achraf Hakimi, formerly of Real Madrid and Brahim Diaz, currently of Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Those two are arguably the star players, but Noussair Mazaroui of Manchester United and goalkeeper Yassine Bonou, formerly of Seville and other La Liga giants. It’s fair to say that manager Walid Regaragui has a good stack of talent in his squad.
Buoyed by their home support, the Moroccans will fancy their chances, but in their way will be Senegal, who have been in three of the last four finals, which does include AFCON glory in 2021.
They possess several Premier League stars in their ranks, including Everton duo Illiman N’Diaye and Idrissa Gueye. In goal, they do have Edouard Mendy, who at one stage was arguably the best goalkeeper in the world.
The match itself could be a case of two teams cancelling each other out, which was how the semi-final between Nigeria and hosts Morocco played out. Here’s to hoping that doesn’t happen.
One thing for certain is, that there are not too much betwee the two sides. May the best team win.
