Things aren’t currently looking good for the former Sporting Lisbon boss, Ruben Amorim. The former Sporting Lisbon manager gave the Red Devil fans a glimmer of hope upon his arrival in November 2024. However, since then, nothing has gone according to plan, as the United boss is yet to win back-to-back games in the Premier League.
In fact, the former Portugal midfielder has the worst win % for any Man United manager. Fast forward to September 2025, and Ruben Amorim’s days as Manchester United manager seem numbered.
It all looked great when the Manchester United board sacked Erik Ten Hag amid poor performances, despite winning the EFL Cup and FA Cup in two consecutive seasons, ending the club’s six-year trophy drought. However, poor performances in European competitions and the Premier League didn’t help the former Ajax boss retain his seat as United boss.
Fans were thrilled to have the new manager, Ruben Amorim, whose results as a manager spoke for themself, as he ended Sporting CP’s 18-year league title drought in his first season as a manager in the 2020/21 season. After that, Sporting also won the league title in 2023/2024, which put the top clubs in Europe on high alert for the Sporting manager.
But amid the sacking of ETH, Ruben Amorim took charge of Man United on November 11, facing Ipswich Town, which ended up as a 1-1 draw. However, fans were excited as the team looked good on the ball and potentially developed a clear playing style. A comfortable 4-0 win against Everton and a 2-1 victory in the derby against Man City kept the fans hooked for a bright future.
Even though Man United never looked comfortable in the Premier League during the 2024/25 season after those wins, a solid run in the Europa League allowed the fans to dream of returning to the Champions League for the following season. But things went from bad to worse when the last hope of ending the season on a high note ended as United lost against Spurs 1-0 in the Europa League final.
With a mixed reaction from fans and hopes for the return of United’s glory days, United entered the 2025/26 season fresh, having said goodbye to players like Rashford, Gernacho, Eriksen, Hojlund, Anthony, Onana, and bringing in players like Cunha, Mbeumo, Sesko, and Lemmens. Players got changed, but what didn’t change is the fortunes of Ruben Amorim as the United manager, whose poor results as the United manager continue, and he is yet to win a back-to-back game in the Premier League.
All this while ending their EFL Cup journey in August against Grimsby Town, leaving only the FA Cup and the EPL as chances of earning silverware. However, even Premier League glory looks bleak already, as they’re five points behind Liverpool so early in the season.
Now with a managing record worse than Gary Neville at Valencia, the sacking of Man United’s boss seems confirmed following the loss to Grimsby Town back in August, who somehow survived after beating Burnley over the weekend. But things again took a turn when United lost the derby to Man City 3-0, and the United boss said in the post-match press conference, “I won’t change my philosophy. If they want it changed, you change the man.”
Even though the majority of fans have lost trust in the United boss, it is now up to the board to decide whether to continue with the former Sporting CP boss or bring in someone else in the hope of taking Manchester United back to its glory days.
When pressed our Chief Sports Writer Ayyaz Malik thinks, “no not at this time despite their struggles, but if results don’t improve, then reluctantly the United board will have to act.
If they do act, for the love of all that’s holy, please, please have an action plan in place with the new man and back him to the full to let him see the fruits of what he has planted.”
