Speculation is mounting that Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo is set to be the first manager to be sacked in this Premier League season. Nuno, 51, led The Pine Trees to an impressive seventh place last term and is now in this season’s Europa League.
Last week, the former Wolves manager went public with a grievance, a lack of signings in his opinion. At that stage, Forest had four summer signings; arguably, after that rant, the summer signings doubled.
As of a couple of days ago, the loan capture of former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, until the end of the season, means that it will be eight summer signings in all for Forest.
Despite this influx of signings and the 3-1 win over Brentford on the first day of the season, Nuno himself suggested that all isn’t well and that things have changed from last season.
How much to look into this, at this moment, is hard to say, but one thing is sure: Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis is a man you don’t want to get on the wrong side of.
Sports fans, do you recall last year’s lean run? During one of the games, Forest players and the manager took to the pitch to remonstrate with some players.
Despite that episode, Nuno appears to claim the relationship has broken down at some point this season.
Nuno or anyone else, for that matter, should think carefully before picking a fight with Mr Marinakis.
This is the same Evangelos Marinakis, who it seemed almost forcefully held a press conference with Morgan Gibbs-White about signing a new deal, when the former Wolves man appeared set to join Spurs.
A medical was even booked, but the deal wasn’t completed with the Greek owners’ blessing, so it didn’t happen.
Now that shows Evangelos Marinakis is a badass.
