Hello, good afternoon sports fans, I hope you’re well, looking after yourselves and are in good health. We need to talk about an important issue in the life of sports, and that’s this week’s Premier League games.
Going into these games, Brentford, Manchester United and City were the teams arguably who have attracted the most headlines over the summer, and of course, the champions Liverpool.
The Bees have lost a lot of talent over the summer, and in the first game, it showed that they’re short and need some new players through the door.
Having signed Dango Outtara yesterday and also giving a debut to Igor Tiago, who scored from the spot, is a slight positive on what was a difficult day at The City Ground.
Christian Norgaard’s move to Arsenal is another significant loss for The Bees. What was great about the Dane Norgaard was that he just did the simple things.
There’s still time until 1st September, but Brentford needs to start dialling the phone to source players now!
Brentford’s opponents have signed David N’Doye from Bologna and have also signed a trio of players, including Omari Hutchinson, James McAtee, and Arnaud Kalaimuendo. Not that manager Nuno seems happy about it.
Liverpool, who kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 4-2 win over Bournemouth, impressed in some parts but left fans worried in others. Naturally, this was an emotional game for The Reds, who were commemorating the loss of their forward Diogo Jota.
Going forward, Arne Slot’s men were breathtaking, but they did leave the back door open and weren’t able to keep the solid base of last season. The suspended Ryan Gravenberch was missed. Last term, it was the former Ajax man who kept things calm in the middle of the park.
Former champions Manchester City had a busy summer. The Blues signed a left-back, a goalkeeper, a forward and a centre-midfielder over the summer. It appears from the outside that Pep is reshaping the team and the way they play, too.
It’s possible; after all, they have signed former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders. First up for them were Wolves, who have caused the former champions problems in the past.
On the day, however, City were impressive, with goals from Erling Haaland (2), Rayan Cherki, and Teijani Reijnders seeing off Wolverhampton Wanderers. Yes, it’s just one game, but City looked solid in the middle of the park, even without midfield linchpin Rodri, who is injured till September with a groin strain.
O, and as for Chelsea despite having Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap and Nicholas Jackson, The Blues can’t hit a barn door.
Last but not least in my alternative look at this week’s Premier League, I look at Manchester United, 20-time winners of the competition. They were up against fierce rivals of the 90s and early 2000s, Arsenal.
Much was made of United spending £200 million on three players. Some fans were screaming in delight, boasting that 20 is on its way, not me. I sensed there was a smoke screen.
True to my prophecy so far, the Red Devils have signed three players and are making public moves for a fourth player, which comes to nothing. In this window, that role goes to Brighton powerhouse Carlos Baleba.
The Cameroonians cost £115 million; it was never going to happen, but the board at United duped some of you again. The middle of the park is an area that needs strengthening, and it’s blatantly obvious.
So Manchester United’s board, what are you going to do?
