Richarlison de Andrade, or Richarlison, is quite the character. The 28-year-old has familiarised himself with English shores, and in turn, English fans have become familiar with him, or so they thought.
I have never met the man, but the narrative I have written from the perception that has been given off is that the former Watford man is outspoken, arrogant and a maverick too.
Of course, in life, one can’t make such casual assumptions. The former Fluminense striker donates 10% of his salary to charity and looks after 100 families in Brazil; this is far from the actions of an arrogant person.
There is a saying, ‘do charity in a way that your left-hand doesn’t know about it’. As much as the man himself would want to do that, I am sure, due to the media attention he gets, this isn’t possible.
Richarlison has also been speaking on social issues and human rights, and several examples of the man being an absolute gem off the pitch. On the pitch, it’s like a switch gets switched.
Gone is Mr I, who speaks about human rights, the only rights he is concerned about when in match-mode? To be right in the ref’s ear. Verbal exchanges with the terraces and opposing players are the norms, and a bad tackle or two that could injure a colleague is part of the standard package.
Despite all the controversies, one way of putting it is that there is a very capable player in 28-year-old Richarlison.
After encouraging form for Everton, a move to Spurs followed. At White Hart Lane, injuries have stalled his career.
He’s been in the shadows while the leading man at Everton has risen to the responsibility.
When he’s been the main man up front for the Brazil national team, he’s shone.
With Son and Harry Kane having left North London and Richarlison starting against Burnley as the main man, he scored a brace.
Here’s another example of why one shouldn’t underestimate Richarlison de Andrade.
