They say, there’s plenty of fish in the sea. What if, however, you’re not a fish in the ocean, but you’re a shark in the river? Step forward, Mr Gianluigi Donnaruma. The former AC Milan shot stopper is seen by many as the world’s best.

Such a statement is subjective and can be that of opinion, but sports fans, you would be hard-pressed to name two better goalkeepers than the Italian last term, yeah?

I believe, and I understand others do too, that Gigi Donnarumma is a big reason why Paris won the Champions League. He was immense in the penalty shootout against Liverpool and across the knockout rounds as well.

All that has been mentioned is all fair and well, but the former AC Milan stopper could be a man stuck in limbo. The 26-year-old is one of the best shot-stoppers in world football, if not the very best, but football is evolving, and so is the position of goalkeeper.

In Serie A, for example, they used to have something called a sweeper keeper. Modern football has brought this back, albeit with a slight twist. Goalkeepers are now expected to perform Johan Cryuff turns and be as skilled with their passing as Xavi Hernandez.

Goalkeepers are more than just goalkeepers these days. Former AC Milan goalkeeper is a great goalie, but his kicking and his handling of crosses aren’t great, which I find astounding for a man of his size and presence.

These are the reported reasons (his kicking and cross-handling) as to why French giants and quintuple winners PSG want to get rid of the 26-year-old. But he’s the best keeper in the world, you’re thinking, and I’m thinking the same.

One reason for the split between the two parties is a contract stand-off, with Donnarumma allegedly seeking more money. AC Milan, we’re aware of your past dealings with the Italian.

So where can the man go then? All clubs in the Premier League are moving away from having the kind of goalkeepers that he is.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool all have the modern keepers. The Red Devils need him the most, as do Chelsea, a team I hadn’t mentioned, but in my humble opinion, seems best suited to him.
