The headlines are telling us that Manchester United are back and that the 21st Premier League title is incoming., but football fans, we have been here before with Man United, with the Glazers, don’t you remember?
During the tenure of looking after footballing operations, they have signed Di Maria, Falcao, Casemiro and other blockbuster talents. In those times, United fans were chirping and had faces of glee, but fast forward a few seasons, it’s become glum life at Old Trafford.
When Ineos took over, it was heralded as a new beginning, the start of the process to kick those good for nothing Glazers out of the club for good. If only, it had turned out like this so far.
Sir Jim Radcliffe, owner of Ineos, who have a minority stake in The Red Devils, made very unpopular moves such as series of job cuts to Man United staff. The veteran entrepreneur was very downbeat in accessing United’s financial health.
According to the man himself, he claimed The Reds were close to being bankrupt by Christmas. Not the news that suffering Manchester United fans wanted to hear.
So after all has been said and done, the feeling around the club was grim. What could be done to lift the mood? That’s it copy The Glazers. Get some stellar names through the door and all will be forgotten for a little at least.
You will need money for that ? What money? Err the £200 million you have managed to find to spend on playing talent, and not the £200 million that could save jobs of the hard working 9-5 working man/woman.
With the three signings, to clarify attacking signings. It can argued they over payed for two of them, that of Bryan Mbuemo and Mattheus Cunha. Former United winger Anthony Elanga cost Newcastle £55 million, about £10 million less than United’s new duo.
But let’s not dwell on that right? United are back. They have signed Wolves’ best player, Brentford’s best player and signed a talented player in Benjamin Sesko who hasn’t done it in the Premier League.
