Football has to be very careful. On one hand, yes, it’s good to go down the route of ‘innocent until proven guilty’, but this doesn’t sit well with me, even though I have been an advocate for the second chances school of thought and a fair chance in life. 

Football fans, I am talking about Thomas Partey, the former Arsenal and Atletico Madrid midfielder, now of Villareal, who signed the veteran this summer. The Ghanaian has been charged with five counts of rape and one charge of sexual assault. 

We’re not lawyers, judges, or jurors here, but the fact that he has been charged doesn’t sit well with me. On the other hand, it’s admirable that the Spanish giants are sticking by the defensive midfielder. 

This is a sensitive subject. As The Ghanian has been charged, I will address her as the victim. From her perspective, it must be heartbreaking that the person who has five charges of rape against her and one sexual assault can carry on as normal and earn a living. 

It’s a fine line; either way, Villareal will be in the wrong. However, if Partey is found guilty to the point of receiving a custodial sentence, this could look bad for The Yellow Submarine. 

People like Benjamin Mendy and Ched Evans, who were both cleared of rape charges, although they did make something of their careers, have both been affected by the charges. 

In Mendy’s case, the Frenchman is still playing professionally for French side Lorient. What has happened in history, rightly or wrongly, the accusation has been stuck on the players record.

Benjamin Mendy has been booed when playing Ligue1, as if he was found guilty, he’s been cleared, let them rebuild his life. Partey needs the same chance too, if he is cleared of the charges.
