Is it supposed to be like this? You need Middle Eastern investment, they said. One of those Saudi or Arab Sheikh guys with deep pockets is required to be a football chairman, and the key to helping your club get propelled into the bigger picture.
What is the bigger picture? Top Six, Top Four or maybe even being involved in the Championship discussion. Once upon a time, such was possible. From Blackburn in the 90s and Manchester City and Chelsea in the early parts of this millennium, having deep-pocketed owners helped propel them to bigger and better things.
With the greatest respect to those sides, without the billions they have as financial backing, they wouldn’t have enjoyed the success they have. The rules around financial fair play were not as strict, and clubs that wealthy owners bought out could upset the status quo.
English football was accustomed to Man United and Arsenal competing with one another for the Premier League title, season upon season. Don’t get me wrong, FFP is essentially needed, but there are parts of it that are flawed.
FFP feels like it’s structured to favour the ‘elite football clubs’.
Newcastle, when they were taken over by the Saudi’s, were thinking that the times of Kevin Keegan in the 90s were upon the horizon. Maybe they are, but for now, even Newcastle United, the richest club in the world, are not above FFP.
To be fair, the Magpies have been quite controlled in the market; they have to be. What’s the point of all that money if you can’t spend it? Hopefully for their sake, new signings are on the horizon.
Aaron Ramsdale is close to a loan deal to join the club.
