In a football transfer window that has seen Premier League new boys Sunderland spend £99 million, more than Barcelona and several La Liga clubs combined, and Manchester United spend £125 million on two players, the Red Devils will be crazy not to look into one or maybe two free players.
Recently released duo Callum Wilson and Jamie Vardy are both looking for new clubs after spending a prolonged period with their last club. Former Sheffield Wednesday trainee Jamie Vardy was bought by The Foxes from Fleetwood Town, of course, for £1 million and would go on to make history with The East Midlands side.
Vardy’s name is in Premier League folklore. The 35-year-old knows where the goal is and, of course, has beaten Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s goal-scoring record in consecutive games.
Even now, he could do a job for a top club. Before you dismiss this theory, United have made some left-field signings in the past. Henrik Larsson and Zlatan Ibrahimovic too.
Uruguayan striker Edison Cavani was another player that United surprisingly pursued. That was before the football world saw the level of performances that he could produce at Old Trafford.
Cavani was an ice-cold finisher, just like Callum Wilson is. Some (Man U fans) might say Wilson didn’t start for Newcastle. Why should we take him? Firstly, Newcastle United are currently better than Manchester United.
It’s a sign of the times; they can’t outbid at any time like they used to.
There’s nothing wrong with that. Real Madrid used to adopt Manchester United’s model, but since they realised they couldn’t continue this way, Los Blancos very shrewdly went down the route of picking up some free signings.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kylian Mbappe, to name just a few. By adopting this strategy, Real can allocate funds to other targets.
With Vardy/Wilson, both know the Premier League. Maybe get either one in for a season, and you never know – it could be a master stroke.
Both would help the current crop of players. Both would have complemented Liam Delap, too, if they could have got him through the door.
