It’s been at the forefront of the build-up for the second test. India have not selected star-bowler Jasprit Bumrah who has been rested, despite there being a seven-day gap between the first and second tests.
Bumrah, who many consider the modern-day great, has struggled with back injuries, among other injuries, in recent times. Even before the start of the series, India coach Gautham Gambhir had said their star man would only play three of the five tests.
Okay, but that still doesn’t make this decision any less surprising. If Bumrah needed rest, give it to him in the middle of the series when the matches come through thicker and faster.
At the time of print, thankfully for India, they have Shubman Gill, their new skipper, who has taken it upon himself to lead from the front. Gill hit a sparkling 267, a nearly perfect effort; the stats genuinely back that up.
Thanks to that superb knock and good support from Jaiswal (87) and Jadeja (89), India were all out for 587. In reply, England slumped to 84-5. However, Jamie Smith (184) and Harry Brook (158) put on 303 for the sixth wicket.
Despite that mammoth effort, the hosts would be bowled out for 407 in their second innings. The tourists, India, finished on 64-1, a lead of 244 with nine wickets remaining.
If Shubman Gill’s India do win this test, yes, it will be deserved, but it will also go some way to silencing the doubters regarding his captaincy and the contentious decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah.
