Centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) and new India captain Shubman Gill (127 not out) helped put England’s bowlers to the sword on day one as India closed on 359-3.

The tourists started well, and the opening pair of Jaiswal and KL Rahul (42) put on 91 for the first wicket. After making that breakthrough, England quickly got another when they dismissed Sai Sudharsan (0). 

England would have thought, at this stage, it could smell blood. The new man was Shubman Gill, the newly named India captain. He Is a talented youngster, for sure, but now he faces the new challenge of leading from the front. 

Maturer players have fallen at such hurdles, but Gill went about his task impressively. Both Jaiswal and Gujarat Titans skipper Gill put one 129 for the third wicket. 

This partnership ended because Indian opener Jaiswal received a superb delivery and was bowled by England captain Ben Stokes. There would be no further breakthroughs as captain Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant put England to the sword further with a sparkling 138-run stand. 

In what was a tough day for England’s bowlers, it was only seamer Brydon Carse, alongside his captain Stokes, to be in the wickets. Those who thought this would be a walk-in for England are mistaken. The Three Lions have it all to do tomorrow.
