South Africa are the World Test Champions after a five-wicket win over Australia. The Proteas, coming into this one-off test, have been notorious for falling in the big moments and, in recognition of that, have been nicknamed chokers.

Not the most desirable nickname to be called, but in this match at the home of cricket, Temba Bavuma’s men meant business from the off when they got rid of star batsman Usman Khawaja, who didn’t trouble the scorers.

Opening partner Marnus Labuschagne didn’t last long (17), and he, too, followed Khawaja back to the pavilion. The world champions were seeing their top order come and go and stumbled to 67-4 as a result.

The retirement of David Warner has clearly rocked what has been a steady batting unit. Several players, such as Steve Smith, have tried to fill the void of Warner, but they have failed.

Beau Webster (72) and Smith (66) scored 79 for the sixth wicket. Despite this brave resistance, the Aussies were all out for 212. In reply, South Africa stumbled to 138 people all out. It was starting to look like a choke was on the horizon.
Not so fast. Cometh the hour cometh the man, and for South Africa, it was Lungi Ngidi (3-38) who swung the game back in favour of Bavuma’s side. That’s not to discredit Kagiso Rabada’s match contribution (9-110).

With Rabada as an example, you have a talented fast bowler who sometimes allowed his fiery side to boil over, but not here. His aggression was controlled.

Australia scored 212 in the first innings and 207 in the second. It could have been worse if it wasn’t for Alex Carey (43) and Mitchell Starc (58 not out). That meant that South Africa needed 282 to be World Test Champions.

Despite a minor wobble, Aiden Markram (136) and Temba Bavuma (66), who tore his hamstring, were crucial in helping The Proteas get over the line. Kyle Veryenne scored the winning run.

Congrats, South Africa, to the world of sports choke on that!
