For nearly two decades, four men dominated men’s tennis: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Novak Djokovic. All of these men are multiple Grand Slam winners and, in their own right, have their place in the sport’s history.
One by one, however, each of these great gladiators of tennis would take their leave and applause and retire from the men’s game. The last one standing, Serb and former world number one Novak Djokovic, has arguably taken his leave after losing to the Italian Jannik Sinner.
Of course, there has been much controversy regarding Sinner’s return, but we won’t discuss that in this article; maybe in another month’s gone by. Italy’s Sinner and Spain’s Alcaraz now seemed destined to rule the sport for the next decade at least.
There’s an air of inevitability about Novak getting dumped out of the French in the semis. There have been signs that Novak Djokovic has just been slightly off these past few months.
This defeat in Roland Garros might confirm that this is more than just a few ‘dodgy months’. The 38-year-old Novak was beaten in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), and after the match, he put his racquet down and said a heartfelt good bye to the Paris crowd.
If that isn’t the sign of the end, I am not sure what is, and if it indeed is, congratulations to Novak Djokovic on a remarkable career. We’re sorry to see you leave. We’re happy to see a new rivalry arrive, too.
