Tottenham Hotspur ended their 17-year trophy drought with a 1-0 win against former Europa League winners Manchester United in an all-English final. The final was a dour affair that didn’t match a European final.
In truth, both sides were no doubt desperate to win a trophy after a disastrous season. Despite both sides looking desperately devoid of ideas, The Lillywhites would win the game through a Brennan Johnson strike just before half-time.
United weren’t able to carve out any real chances of merit until Luke Shaw forced a good save out of Tottenham keeper Vicario late on. A goal for Man United would have been harsh on Spurs, who defended resolutely after scoring the all-important first goal.
This win for Tottenham sees them end their 18-year trophy drought and equally importantly qualify for next years Champions League —no more ‘bottlers’ tag for Spurs. Alongside the Audi Cup is now the Europa League!
Some can say that Tottenham have passed the baton to Manchester United. Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs will be in next season’s Champions League. The Red Devils’ closest connection to Europe’s premier football club competition is through Fifa or Championship Manager.
