Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, who will leave the club after a decade with the club, has come out and said he didn’t want to leave The Cityzens, but rather it was the club who said they didn’t want to renew the Belgians’s contract.

Last year, the 33-year-old played 25 times for the four-time reigning Premier League champions. This year, the number of appearances has been less than 16. This could be what forced Pep’s hand for those cold numbers alone.

The person who can only honestly answer such a question is Pep Guardiola himself. Possible replacements for KDB could be Lucas Pacqueta of West Ham and Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle.

Both are very talented players. In the case of Pacqueta, it appeared that a move to Man City was going to be concluded, only for an FA betting charge to thwart the move.

A club of the standing of Man City won’t easily get rid of one of their best players in the last decade without lining up a replacement. In-house, they do have Phil Foden; the Stockport-born player can step out of such an illustrious shadow.

At 33, Kevin De Bruyne has a lot to offer. However, in the Premier League, he might not be able to perform like he did in years gone by. Sports fans, I am adamant that KDB isn’t a spent force.

For his lofty standards, the Belgian isn’t quite reaching those dizzy heights. But just think of Andrea Pirlo, Ryan Giggs, and, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Here are examples of players who have played to a high standard well into their 30s. The example of Pirlo was an example of AC Milan’s bad judgement of letting a player go who they thought was past his best but clearly still had something to offer.

I have been an optimist forever, but the same will be said of Kevin De Bruyne.
