In the 1990s, Manchester United and Arsenal were seen as the top sides. Coming into this century, the pool of top sides expanded and became a top six. That top six, or the big six, was widely acknowledged as Man United, Man City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, and Chelsea.

Whoever made such a call, in my humble opinion, thinks it’s a dubious one, to put it mildly. I say this because until the last two seasons, United hadn’t been winning trophies, and Spurs, well, their last trophy was all the way back in 2008.

Historically, the Lillywhites did enjoy success, but football fans of today think that football started in the 1990s, the Premier League era. So, in the last decade, give or take, yours truly, Ayyaz Malik, aka The Sports Buff, is adamant that an argument can be made that the top six has been toppled.

First, Leicester City assaulted the top six under their former manager Brendan Rodgers. The new Celtic manager guided The Foxes to top-five finishes. It could have been even better for the 2016 Premier League title winners.

After that came West Ham, and they, just like Leicester, laid an assault on the top four. The Hammers, for several seasons, were the side to break the mould and be in the top six.

Newcastle and Aston Villa have made efforts to break into the top six recently, but even more so in the four. For those of you who might cling to the old notion that the top six are United, City, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, and Chelsea, I am sorry to break it to you, but you’re living in delusion.

I argue that Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle, Aston Villa, and, of course, the reigning champions of Manchester City make up the big six, but do you agree?
