In the world of football, a month is a very long time, never mind that so is a week too. Well, in the months—no, it’s more accurate to say weeks that David Moyes returned to Everton after a 12-year absence, it has been a good one.
Under previous manager Sean Dyche, The Toffees weren’t terrible; they were disciplined and well-organised, but the most apparent issue was their goal-scoring. Everton would win games, but at times, they would bore the opponents to death; under Moyes, not so much.
Have the 1995 FA Cup winners turned into prime Barcelona? No, of course not, but they play a brand of football that’s easy to accept. This version of Everton isn’t careless, but it’s more expansive.
There’s an element of playing more with the hand break-off. In today’s game, for example, the Merseysiders gave United a real game in the first half. On their behalf, it was unfortunate they couldn’t control the tide of the second half, but they had to get better; Man United were so poor.
David Moyes’s arrival has made this result feel like two points dropped, whereas arguably, in the past, it would have felt like a point gained. Managers like Pep and Klopp, for example, made their names by playing forward rather than a striker.
What that means is that in teams gone by, there would have been no Haaland or Nunez-like players in their teams, but times are changing, and both managers, to a point, reverted back to type.
Even the great Don Carlo Ancelotti plays 4-4-2. Why this is necessary to mention because those who might argue that David Moyes’ way isn’t a good way to play should note that Guardiola’s all-conquering system, this infallible body armour that City had, now has a chink in it.
I leave you with that thought.
