Pakistan’s cricketers got their Tri-series off to the worst start with an abject display in a 78-run loss to New Zealand. Going into this series, I saw that the men in green were in good form.

Mohammed Rizwan’s men won the ODI series in South Africa and Australia. With the greatest respect to Mitch Santner’s Kiwis, they were beatable. On the day, however, Pakistan arguably allowed them to get away with a big total.

Courtesy of Harris Rauf’s bowling, New Zealand was kept in check, but when the Lahore Qalandar pacer got injured and couldn’t continue, Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah lacked discipline, which enabled the tourists to reach 330.

Courtesy of the tourists, the big total was a fine innings from Daryll Mitchell (81) and a belligerent one from Glenn Phillips (106).

In reply, only Fakhar Zaman, who had been recalled to the side, would make a score of note (84). Salman Ali Agha (40) and Tayyab Tahir (30), got in and out.

There’s a lot to play for, but what a good start to the series by New Zealand.
