Former World Champion Sean Murphy produced arguably some of the best snooker in his career to win his second Masters Crown by defeating reigning World Champion Kyren Wilson 10-7.
Going into the evening session, Murphy, nicknamed The Magician, had a commanding 6-2 lead, but credit to Wilson, who fought back brilliantly to make a real fist of it.
Thankfully, Sean was able to hold off the comeback and appear in his first ranking major tournament since the 2021 World Championship, where Mark Selby defeated the 42-year-old.
One of the main reasons for Sean’s win was his seven centuries in the tournament; the next best was four. Quite remarkably, Murphy hit a 147 break in the semi-final, having come close to scoring a maximum beforehand.
Massive credit must go to coach Peter Ebdon for this razor-sharp focus in the 42-year-old Murphy’s game. For all the talent, Sean Murphy was finding ways to get dumped out of tournaments quickly; now, this might not be as often the case.
This was some way to compensate for the loss of defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, who had to withdraw from the tournament due to health concerns.
