David Moyes was appointed Everton manager for a second time, 11 years after his highly successful first spell in charge of The Toffees. Moyes, of course, would leave Goodison Park and go on to be Sir Alex’s hand-picked replacement, but the great man seems to play such talk down.
Whatever the truth, the former Preston manager had the most desirable job in world football but also the most challenging: replacing the great Sir Alex Ferguson. The now 61-year-old would be the first one to admit he made mistakes in the Old Trafford dugout, but if given the chance again, he would make a success of it.
Many football community members, including David Moyes, would argue about this. But the Manchester of new and old are world’s are part. In the past, The Red Devils had stability around the place; the only thing that has certainty in the Theatre Of Dreams these days is a two-star hygiene rating.
How Sir Alex must watch on with anguish. He built football’s equivalent of a Roman-like Empire in 27 years, only to crumble away within half of that time.
Back to David Moyes, though. After failing with the 20-time Premier League champions, Moyes answered the call of Real Sociedad, which, along with a spell with Sunderland, ended in disappointment.
So when the Everton legend was given the West Ham job, there were many sceptics. To his credit, the former Celtic defender kept The Hammers in the Premier League, such were their struggles when he took over, but the usual West Ham board ran out of patience.
Manuel Pellegrini, the Premier League-winning manager, was hired and fired against the East London side, who were at the wrong end of the table. Queue oncoming panic; queue a Moyes second spell in charge?
This is what would happen. Much to the surprise of many and to David Moyes’ credit, West Ham improved under the Scot. A Europa Conference League title came, alongside successive top-six finishes.
As impressive as those feats were, West Ham United dispersed his services again. Julian Lopetegui was hired to replace the former Everton manager and has since been fired, with Graham Potter replacing him.
I have mentioned the above because Everton are asking their former manager to play a similar role. The role of ‘fire-fighter’. Metaphorically, there’s a fire at Everton, and Moyes is one of the best footballing fire-fighters there are in the game.
The Friedkin group is following a similar pattern to what they have at Roma, Sacking Jose and replacing him with a club legend, Danielle Di Rossi, in that example.
The American owners are new to Everton, where they have been faithful to their managers over time. As good a manager as David Moyes is, he will need time. Whatever you do, Mr. Friedkin Jr. and Jr., don’t copy your practices with Roma at Everton.
