Newcastle United took a significant stride to the Carabao Cup final after beating Arsenal 2-0 at The Emirates in the first leg of their semi-final. Goals from in-form Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon helped The Magpies return to the North East with a significant lead.
Arsenal could have taken the lead, but Gabriel Martinelli’s strike hit the post. Jurrien Timber and William Saliba also went close when the game was goalless, but Arteta’s side couldn’t score.
Those misses proved costly as Newcastle gradually settled into the contest and were able to kill off the game through goals from Isak and Gordon. The Gunners are not out of the tournament, but it will take some effort to come back from here.
Newcastle will be looking to reach their second Carabao Cup final in the past three years. The second leg will be played on 5th February at St James Park.
