After returning to the second test, Pakistan inexplicably crumbled and lost the second and final test in their series against South Africa 2-0. After being skittled out for just 194 in the first innings, Shaan Masood (145) and Babar Azam (81) combined to put on 200 runs for the first wicket, but this was on the back of having to follow on.
Mohammed Rizwan (41) and Salman Agha (48) made starts, but both fell to soft dismissals, Agha especially so after being given a reprieve a few balls earlier.
Mir Hamza (16) and Aamer Jamal (34) hung around a bit to produce cameo innings, giving the tourists a lead to defend, but the lapse of concentration from star batters Rizwan and Agha was crucial to the game’s context.
Even at 417-6, there was no need for panic stations, but three wickets fell for just 61 runs, leaving the home side having to chase just 58 to win the test. Having come so close to saving the day and the match, the collapse was spectacular and dramatic.
The Proteas won this one by 10 wickets. David Beddingham hit a 30-ball 44, and Aiden Markram 13-ball 14. A great way to prepare for the final against Australia comes in the summer.
As for Pakistan, they will wonder what could have been as, yet again, they had some periods of domination in the test.
