India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket. Ashwin, who has had a 14-year career with his country, became the seventh-highest wicket-taker in tests and the second-highest Indian wicket-taker with 537, only behind Anil Kumble’s 619.
As great a bowler as he was, Ashwin was very capable with the bat. He scored six centuries in his career, at an average of 25.75. Ravi Ashwin will go down as one of the greatest spinners to have played the game.
In 2011, he won the World Cup on home soil with his country. The 38-year-old’s retirement was only going to be a matter of time, but to announce it mid-series is a little surprising.
With players like Axar Patel in the India side, this will ease the transition period for India. Ashwin only played two games in India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign.
That in itself was a glance into the future.
