Leeds United, Coventry City, Portsmouth, Fiorentina, Parma, Bordeaux Deportivo La Coruna, Glasgow Rangers—I am sure there are many more—are examples of some mighty teams that have fallen.

When I say fall, dear reader, as footballing powerhouses, they have regained some power, but financially, all of these sides have been to the brink, if not over the brink, of financial oblivion.

They came back up with Fiorentina after rising from the bottom and changing their name, just like Glasgow Rangers did. Parma, another Serie A giant, did the same as Fiorentina and had to work their way up from Serie D.

Looking back now, some may say the whole ordeal was a bit of a ‘blur’, but this would have been far from a blur for those connected to those clubs. Macclesfield and Bury are two other clubs that could be mentioned in this article, but they have yet to be, as neither side has started their jump up the footballing pyramid.

I have opened up this conversation because of the news of Olympique Lyonnais, the former seven-time champ of France. Now, they are in financial difficulties, but the powers that be have yet to go all-out sanctions on them …. yet fully.

But the French club has been making provisions, such as selling highly-rated centre-back Jake O’Brien to Everton. Football hopes you won’t be another big name, Lyon, but you must be careful.
